APAM Emulsion For Sewage

The sewage APAM emulsion that the difference lie in its molecular weight and anionic degree.  Anionic polyacrylamide flocculant (APAM emulsion) is always used for produced water treatment and oily sludge treatment.

Emulsion APAM for sewage is a chemical additive widely used in STP and refineries.

APAM emulsion is a kind of emulsion substance made from acrylamide after anionization treatment. The APAM emulsion's chemical formula is (C3H5NO)n and sewage treatment use liquid APAM appearance is white emulsion.

The content of anionic polyacrylamide flocculant for oilfield is 40%.

The molecular weight of sewage APAM emulsion is 15~30 and the specific granvity of sewage APAM is 1.0 and the pH value (1 % aqueous solution) is 6.5~7.5.

The mixing ratio of anionic polyacrylamide flocculant (APAM) emulsion and inorganic flocculants (such as polyaluminium chloride PAC, polyferric sulfate PFS, etc.) is not a fixed value. It needs to be adjusted flexibly according to factors such as water quality characteristics, treatment objectives, and reagent models. In practical applications, the ratio of the two (calculated based on the active ingredients) usually shows the characteristic of "inorganic flocculant as the main component and APAM emulsion as the auxiliary component".

The following are the common rules and reference ranges:

1. Core Ratio Rules (Calculated Based on Active Ingredients) The ratio of the active ingredients of inorganic flocculants (taking PAC/PFS as examples) to APAM emulsion is usually between 10:1 - 100:1. That is, for every 10-100 parts of active ingredients of inorganic flocculants added, 1 part of active ingredients of APAM emulsion is added.

Reason: Inorganic flocculants mainly destabilize colloidal particles through charge neutralization and require a sufficient amount to complete the initial flocculation. As a high molecular coagulant aid, APAM emulsion strengthens the formation of flocs through "adsorption bridging". A small amount of it can significantly improve the effect, and excessive use may cause the flocs to disperse due to the entanglement of molecular chains.

2. Key Factors Affecting the Ratio of anionic polyacrylamide flocculant

1). Water Quality Characteristics

2). Treatment Objectives

3). Reagent Models

Inorganic flocculants: The charge intensities of PAC (aluminum salt) and PFS (iron salt) are different. PFS is more adaptable to high turbidity water and may require a lower proportion of sewage APAM.

APAM emulsion: The higher the molecular weight (the longer the chain), the stronger the bridging ability, and the less the dosage required. The ratio may tend towards 100:1.

3. Practical Operation Suggestions

1). Determine the ratio through jar tests: Take the sewage to be treated, fix the concentration of the inorganic flocculant, gradually adjust the dosage of the APAM emulsion, and observe the size of the flocs, the sedimentation speed, and the turbidity of the supernatant to find the optimal ratio (usually with the criteria of "the clearest supernatant and the tightest flocs").

2). Dosing sequence: First add the inorganic flocculant (stir for 1-2 minutes to make the particles initially destabilize), and then add the APAM emulsion (stir slowly to avoid breaking the flocs). This sequence can reduce reagent waste and optimize the ratio.

There is no "standard answer" for the mixing ratio of the two. The core is that the inorganic flocculant sufficiently neutralizes the charge, and the APAM emulsion bridges and strengthens with a small amount. In practice, it needs to be adjusted according to the water quality through jar tests. The common ratio of active ingredients is 10:1 - 100:1. High turbidity sewage tends towards a higher ratio (a higher proportion of inorganic flocculant), and low - turbidity water tends towards a lower ratio.
