Homopolymer sewage treatment PAM: It is formed only by the polymerization reaction of acrylamide (AM) monomers. The molecular chain of sewage treatment PAM contains only amide groups (-CONH₂), belonging to the non ionic type (or a single charge type in very rare cases), with a simple structure. 

Copolymer sewage treatment PAM : It is formed by the copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and other monomers (such as acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, cationic monomers, etc.). Besides the amide groups, the molecular chain of sewage treatment PAM also contains other functional groups (such as carboxyl groups -COOH, quaternary ammonium groups -N⁺R₃, etc.), thus carrying a definite charge (anionic, cationic, or amphoteric), and having a more complex structure. 

Homopolymer sewage PAM powder: Relying solely on adsorption bridging, it is suitable for simple, low charge environments. It has a low cost but a narrow application range and has gradually been replaced by copolymers of sewage PAM powder.

Copolymer of sewage PAM powder: By enhancing the efficiency of the action through charge neutralization, it has a wider range of application (especially in complex sewage treatment and sludge dewatering). It is a more mainstream choice in sewage treatment PAM application. Among them, PAM cationic powder copolymers are irreplaceable in sludge dewatering, and anionic copolymers(sewage PAM powder) are most widely used in industrial wastewater treatment.

Limitations of Homopolymer sewage PAM powder: They are only applicable to scenarios with low charge and low turbidity, such as the pretreatment of tap water. However, they have gradually been replaced by copolymers sewage PAM powder. Due to their unique production process, sewage cationic PAM copolymers are the first choice in the treatment of industrial wastewater from industries like steel and printing and dyeing. They are especially suitable for alkaline environments (anionic products). In sludge dewatering, sewage cationic PAM products are irreplaceable.

The adsorption of copolymer sewage cationic PAM can change the surface wettability of sludge particles, reducing the affinity between the particles and water, making it easier for water to separate from the flocs (such as through gravity drainage, pressure filtration, etc.). At the same time, the optimization of the floc structure (with a more reasonable pore distribution) can reduce the “retention” of water inside the flocs, improve the clarity of the filtrate, and reduce the difficulty of subsequent treatment. 

Through the synergistic effects of charge neutralization bridging flocculation net trapping and sweeping, combined with its adjustable molecular structure (charge density, chain length, functional group distribution), copolymer sewage cationic PAM can specifically address the problems of colloidal stability and difficult dewatering of municipal sludge, and it is an efficient conditioner in the sludge dewatering process.
